Question 2 mattreses in cot?

I got my cot from ebay so it's second hand, (in perfect condition for a very small sum ) and it came with a mattress. Now I am am aware it's a sids risk to use a second hand mattress, especially from an unknown source, but I had already bought a cot mattress months ago and I have just set up the cot, and put the second hand one on the bottom, and the new one on top.

It is the perfect height to put bubs on, still far enough from the top so that bubs can't get fall out, and given I am having a c/s, would it be okay to do this just until bubs is a few weeks old or my tummy isn't too sore? It's very firm so bubs won't sink into the mattresses either.

After that I am going to let DD use it in her room or for other kids staying over, it's in too good condition to be throwing out.

I think there is a minimum height that they say is safe between the top of the mattress and the top of the rail does the bottom of the cot raise at all or is it just the one level?

If it is just the one level then I dont see how it is any different to having a cot that has one of the bases that raises up.

I used 2 cot mattress's with all my kids until they were about 4 months old!! I was waaaaaayy easier to lift them in and out (plus I didn't have to lower and raise the rail every time I put bub's in...

It is 2 levels, and there is still a 30-40cms gap between the top of the mattress and the rail of the cot. This would only be very short term, basically until my tummy feels strong enough to be bending over the railing. I'm a bit of a shorty so it'd be a real struggle whilst still recovering from c/s.

I don't really see that it's any different to my portacot with the newborn 'shelf' in it.

I used it like that til he was about 3mths or so and when it's in it's only about 8cms or so from the top.

Would certainly make it easier for you after having a C/S.

I think thats a really smart idea Cheeky ... might put my second mattress to the same use

My only concern would be if there was any stains or odour coming from the old mattress ... while your new baby won't be touching the old mattress it will still be close enough to inhale things from. If it looks as good as new and doesn't set off your sense of smell then i think you'd be safe for the short term.

If you're worried you could always wrap the bottom mattress in a sheet/tarp/plastic - I think it's a good idea. DD was so late to roll/move in her cot that we didn't even bother raising the side until she was about 8/9 months (bad mummy ). Made it so much easier to sit next to her to settle/pat her, and we didn't have to disturb her with all the clunking of the side rail.
