Emigrating... To those living overseas away from family & friends
Hi,
I'm just wondering for anyone that lives overseas from family..how do you cope? How do you accept that you will only see your family once a year to once every 1.5 years...??
I just need to find some strength to help me cope with it all. From leaving to finding myself homesick on bad days...how do you cope? How do you accept this?

my family are ALL in the UK, dh's family are in NZ. We cope cos we have to, I think if we had had a family support network and then moved away it would be really hard but seeing as we have never had it we know no different. However we all adapt especially when it is in the interests of our child and you will just make new networks and be your OWN family unit.
Yes it's hard for sure, my mum is yet to meet her grandson and with this one on the way I don't know when or if she ever will. She has cancer and can't fly so who knows what the future holds.
One thing I know for sure though is he KNOWS who his Nana is thanks to skype!
I have been here in Australia for 16 years and stil get times when I am homesick but I know I am in the right place for me and my son (hubby as well obviously!!). When the pangs get string I remind myself why I left and why after those reasons left why I stayed.

Our family are not overseas but are a 12hr drive away, so we only see them a few times a year. Our day to day life is structured around having no help from anyone. You deal with it because you have to. Yeah its hard somedays, and DH and I really miss our 'us' time but thats the life we have

like Miss_C I also emigrated 16 yrs ago... my family are all in the uk and DH is an only child with both parents passed away.
Unlike Miss_C I dont have a close relationship with my parents (at least, not in the last 3 yrs) and only speak to them a couple of times a year. My daughter hasnt ever had 'involved' grandparents and sometimes thats sad but mostly she doesnt know any different. I would rather have someone that wants to be there for her that isnt a blood relation than a relation who doesnt make the effort... Enjoy the freedom
... your 'family' is your child, if people want to keep in touch the technology is there to make it happen... lastly, I have always kept 'available' (be it on a credit card or whatever) enough to get back to the uk should I feel I need to, but as time has passed I feel less and less inclined
