Unhappy Taking Certain Medications while being pregnant..

Hi girls,

About 3 months ago, I was on the medication Doxycycline 50mg tablets, for my bad skin problems aka acne. I only just recently found out I'm 13 weeks pregnant.

I worked out the dates I started taking the medication and it's roughly the same time I got pregnant, but I felt a bit odd 2 weeks or so into the medication (probably maximum up to 4 weeks because I was a bit weary) because I had missed a period. I didn't think too much of it, it has happened before and I haven't been pregnant.. so I didn't worry about it too much but I did stop taking the medication.

Must have been a month or so later, I had missed another period so I talked it over with my partner we dismissed the possibility.. but still I had that feeling that I was pregnant.

I went to my doctors about a week and a half ago and found out I was pregnant, I told the doctor "approx" anywhere from 6-9 weeks *at that time I was unaware I had been pregnant for so long*, had a blood test which I do get results this Monday.. had an ultrasound and bang I found out I was 13 weeks!

I'm just a bit worried that the early most important stages of taking the medication I was pregnant, might this have some affects on the baby? I am going to talk to my doctor on Monday, but the feeling inside my baby could have some sort of defect or problem brings me to tears. Has anyone else experienced anything like mine? Been on the same medication?

The sickening feeling my child could have some problems worries me. Please someone anyone, get back to me.

Hi congrats on your pregnancy. If you ring the drug information line and chat to someone there they may be able to put you at ease.

I hope everything is ok

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that or seeing if anyone else had been through the same ordeal I am going through. Thanks a million.

I was given a medication that is deemed unsafe in pregnancy when I was 4 weeks pregnant and took it for 2 weeks. Thankfully for us because we were so early in the pregnancy the medication had no ill effect to my boy

Fingers crossed you will be in the same boat. Your Doctor will be able to look up the specific medication you were on and let you know what to expect.

Up until about 6-7 weeks, nothing crosses the placenta, because there isn't really one there yet.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about, but I can understand your concern. I was on medication up until about 8 weeks into my pregnancy, and it was one of the bad ones. But my DD is fine.

Just talk it out with your GP and hopefully they can alleviate some of your concerns.

Here is a link for you, HERE, if you scroll down to Tetracyclines, the drug you have named is one of those described. It says that this medication can be safely taken until 18 weeks, with no adverse affects. Hope this can put your mind at ease until your GP appointment...

Oh thankyou so much, yes I'm visiting my doctor at the earliest I can tomorrow morning! I'll be having my blood test results that was performed a week ago or so and then I can have a talk about it with my doctor.

Thanks for linking that I'm having a look now. Thanks for help!

Well I found out at the doctors everything would be alright.. my partner went and got his blood test to find out what type he is (The doctor asked us to do it) and I had another blood test for any abnormalities with the baby and also it's blood type for anyone still interested.

Something about O Negative blood + babys blood = some complications? Anyway, thanks girls.

If you are O negative if your DP is a positive blood grouping you could potentially have Rhesus incompatability. Most likely you will be offerred Anti D shots if you have any bleeding and at 28 and 32wks.

There is more information here:

I am negative and DH is positive. We are on our 3rd PG without issues. DS1 was born O Positive, DS2 was born O negative.
