Default Metformin and Fertility

So I saw my doctor today and he mentioned that Metformin helps with fertility....

We are just about to start TTC number 2

What exacetly does Metformin do that helps with fertility? Is there an increased chance of multiples?

Edit: I should add that I take 2x 500mg twice daily....

Metformin corrects insulin resistance and restores the balance of hormones acting on the ovaries so you return to a normal cycle. As far as I understand it.
It doesn't increase the risk of multiples

I've been on it for 9 years to correct insulin resistance and managed a suprise baby despite being told I'm infertile so it must do something!

Oh and my insulin resistance is severe and I'm on 2.5 GRAMS a day

I have severe PCOS and insulin resistance.

I have been on 1g of metformin for the last 12 months.

In that time I've gone from having wild, crazy periods (one or two a year, three- four months apart and lasting weeks on end with no sign of ovulation), to regular, normalish 60 day cycles. They have been regular, the most regular I have ever experienced and gradually getting shorter.

I am even experiencing ovulation signs again, something totally foreign to me.

It was a rough start on the metformin, it still does make me sick, and I was pessimistic that it was helping for a while, but it really it starting to make some changes to my cycle and I believe it kick-started me ovulating again, so I am pleased.

Apparently it's supposed to help you lose weight too. I dont think this is the case for me. But I've heard some people responding well to that side of it.

Good luck, just beware of the poo-storm at the beginning!

So true and the reason you loose weight at first!

Mrs mac- If you have insulin resistance beware of glucosamine (for joints). The body reacts to it like it wasd glucose and produces more insulin, it was what stopped my mum loosing weight for 8 years but since she stopped she's gone from a sz 20 to a sz 14 in a year.
