home hair dye for covering grey

Hi,
This is a little embarrassing. I do not dye my hair and now, being in my 40s (), there is a fair bit of grey in it. I'm usually not too fussed about it, but am going back to part-time work this year and think I should probably start dyeing it to cover the grey.

My hair is dark brown (those bits that aren't grey, that is!).

So, what is the best home hair dye kit to use? There are so many on the market that I get confused. I will probably just get one from the supermarket.

How often will I need to re-dye it?

Any tips on dyeing hair? How long does it take? Will I need any equipment that is not in the dye kits?

Also, I'm still breastfeeding DD2 so don't want to use anything that will compromise that.

I don't have alot of an idea on hair colours as I don't colour my hair (either at home or hairdresser) however when I used to work in pharmacy & sold hair colours I remember that NOT all do it yourself ones will cover grey hair, so make sure you read the packet.

Also if you choose ones that has a red or mahogany in it, the greys are more likely to take on that redish colour, not the brown, but thats not entirely bad.

Not sure what else, but I'm sure others will have more suggestions.

You need to get a permanent - not a semi-permanent colour and look for something a touch darker than your natural shade (any of the permanent colours are good, just get one that is on sale) - start by dyeing/painting all of your roots and then spread it through the rest of your hair (if you have long/thick hair you might need 2 packets).

I have grey all through my hair (dark brown hair) and I have to dye it every 4 - 5 weeks or the greys in my part are VERY obvious. I use a plum colour so it looks dark brown but has a plumish sheen in sunlight. It doesn't take me very long, probably about 15 mins to run the colour through (if you are not used to dyeing it might take you about 30mins to put the colour in and then it has to process for 30 - 45mins).

In addition to the kit, I have a hair dye brush (looks like a paintbrush with a pointed end and a wide fan brush - you can get them at priceline etc) this brush makes it easier to apply the colour at the roots and to part your hair as you go.

Make sure that you note the brand/colour you have used so if you love it, you can stick with that one from now on.

And that's about all I can think of - oh hang on, I have been dyeing my hair through 2 pregnancies and 2.5 years of breastfeeding and it has never had an impact (I'm still breastfeeding now and still regularly dyeing my hair)!
