Default Rectal prolapse in child - anyone experienced this?

This happened to DD (almost 4) tonight. I think she strained too hard on the toilet (although I was in the kitchen cooking dinner, so don't know what happened exactly). Won't go into any more detail - not pretty. I called Health Direct and we resolved the situation. DD is fine now, although a bit scared. She's not the only one! On Health Direct's advice (the nurse was excellent) we are heading to the doctor tomorrow. But I was wondering whether anyone else had experienced something like this?

Thanks for your replies. I'm afraid that I am guilty of googling it hence this post. She's doing fine - no problems going to sleep, not sure what tomorrow will bring but hoping all is well.

I never google normally, but I didn't really know what it was so thought I would.

Good luck, please let us know though how she goes.

I remember it happening to my sister when she was a child. She was fine afterwards, maybe a little prone to constipation, but not sure if that was part of the problem in the first place. She still suffers from it anyway, but I don't think she's had another prolapse.

Hopefully your dr will be able to give you a clearer picture, poor little chicken!

Thanks guys! Duedrop, glad to hear it has happened to someone else without too much drama.

Visited the GP, who wasn't able to shed much light on the incident. We will discuss it with DD's paediatrician at our next appointment (coming up in a couple of weeks - she sees him regularly for other issues). I'll post back then in the hope it will help someone else!

Anyone else experienced this? Would love to hear the circumstances.

DD experienced this at about 2 1/2. I fixed it myself, and watched her diet more closely and we've not had a problem since. I started adding fibresure to her morning drink too for a year and by then she was eating a more widely varied diet and became a porridge addict. There's been no re-occurance and no ill effects.
