Thanks Anna, I contacted Brita and they were pretty reassuring that their product is fine. I am now worried about the tinned food and will get rid of my microwave dish tomorrow. The dangers lurking in our homes is scary

My understanding is that you want to avoid cans which have a white lining that you can see easily when you take the food out. Not every can will have that, eg., the organic tomatoes from Aldi have the white lining in the can but the ordinary peeled tomatoes don't. Some brands of baked beans have the white lining in the can, but others don't. I was told that mainly acidic foods (like tomatoes) that have the white lining in cans.

As for heating food in plastic in the microwave, I thought that had been a big 'no no' for years. We ditched our plastic microwave stuff ages ago and replaced it with pyrex, much better!

BTW, just because a plastic has a '7' on the bottom doesn't necessariy mean that it has BPA in it. '7' is the catch all number for plastics which have several different types of plastic in them, as well as for plastics with BPA in them. Rafferty's pouches are labelled with a 7 but the pouches don't have BPA in them; they are labelled with '7' because they have several different kinds of plastic in the layers which make up the pouch. So I wouldn't race out to ditch all of your plastic labelled '7', but it is worthwhile checking with the manufacturer to see what the product is made from.

Absolutely true T - I believe the white cans are worse.

I must admit I hadn't thought much about BPA it all until just recently when I began thinking about whether or not the Avent bottles I've got (some of which would be nearly 20 yrs old!) would be still ok to use. Given what my job entails, this is kind of embarrassing...

Anyway, as for the drink bottles, as far as I know the soft plastic ones are supposed to be better - although they seem to be the ones that make the water taste more like plasticisers than anything else. DS uses them every day for school, sport etc, etc, we seem to have them everywhere! I am gradually changing over to metal drink bottles - I really should bite the bullet after this discussion. Lucky I picked up some Anaconda ones for $3 each at the caravan show...

Another thing about plastic drink bottles that I forgot earlier - I had heard that you shouldn't drink water out of them if they have been left in the car and got hot (even if they have cooled again). Refilling the polycarbonate water bottles for use in the car seems to be a classic around here...

Don't you just wish sometimes that we were born in a time when we didn't have to worry about these sorts of things?
