Default Hysterical at nappy change

Woah, this last 1.5 weeks has been a whirlwind for us....DD has finally gotten her first tooth, she's had a couple of colds, deciding she only wants 1 day sleep and is generally unsettled. Her nappy changes have been progressively challenging, she will squirm and flip and make it very hard to get a nappy on her. I have been distracting her with new things for her to play with but I'm starting to run out of new 'exciting' things for her.

Anyway, the last two days she has become hysterical while we're trying to put her nappy on. I don't know what's happened. It doesn't matter if it's a cloth or sposie. If we're using a sposie, she's fine when we apply to barrier cream (but we do it with her standing), but the second we try to lay her down to put the nappy on, she screams like a banshee. We've never heard her be hysterical before. We have tried to distract her with exciting things to play with, distract her by playing/singing etc, have her in a different location. It's gradually happening more frequently, and I'm worried that every nappy change is going to be like this.

Could there be a reason for this or is it likely she's just decided she doesn't want to have a nappy put on? DH and I are the only ones who have ever changed her nappy. She doesn't seem to have a problem with it once it's on.

Any ideas on what I can do? It's really becoming quite stressful, and literally impossible if only one of us is around to change her.

my DD is about the same ages as your DD and she does the same thing. I think it may just be a phase they are going thru. I asked around at my mothers group and friends etc and they all said at some stage their little one did this too ...

I know what you mean about being stressful! here's hoping they both cut it out soon!

Dont worry i would say its just a phase, my DS went through it and he has now finally gotten over it, now he runs and gets his change mat out of his bedroom and brings it to me in the lounge room and lays down waiting for me to change him lol. No advice as to how to stop it, we just let it ride itself out... unfortunately it did take over a month and i dreaded changing his nappy in that time!

thank you for your replies. i was hoping it was a 'phase' and not a sign that something was dreadfully wrong. lucky it's warm because we're leaving the nappy off more often than on (and she's done a poo in a potty 3 times now!)

I'd say it's normal. DD went through a phase of hating nappy change time too! She used to kick and scream and twist - it was like trying to put a nappy on a snake!!

She got over it eventually and seems to be back to normal.

I asked at my mothers group at the time and their bubs were doing similar things too.

hi there

we put a playgym (the kind with the bars and dangly toys) under the changemat on the table.

DS will lay under the playgym and play with musical toys while we change his nappy.

perhaps give it a try?
