Does anyone know how to get the really cheap airfares? im wanting to visit someone in perth(leaving from sydney) and have been looking and the cheapest i have found is $229 one way, which really isnt in my price range- anyone know how to get the cheapies?

I'm not sure what dates you were travelling so I couldn't have a look, but a really good site is the webjet. They compare all flights available. Good luck, hope you find a cheapie

Just got my brohter a flight from Melb to Darwin for $99!

I think the time you fly ie school holidays, peak time frames etc makes a difference...

the dates dont really matter- just the cheapest flights- considering i'll be taking DD and it'll be for at least one night it could end up being $1000+ if i cant get the flight cheaper

I'm sorry, but $229 is a pretty good price for a flight to Perth.

Be aware that the SYD-PER route is always going to be a lot more costly due to the distance and secondly, is rarely discounted due to the growing demand as Perth continues to become a more valuable corporate/resource destination.

I know it seems crappy in comparison to the insane $10 Tiger flights but think about it, New Zealand is closer!

Having said that, in addition to webjet, try bestflights.com.au or skyscanner.net also do comparisons and check for the cheapest flights on the day.

Oh and make sure you have signed up for the airline's email updates... this is how you'll find out when the sales are announced.

I do think that $229.00 is cheap for a flight to perth though.

hi,

virgin blue has happy hour everyday starting at midday, so maybe check them. i found a $199 flight for the 1st of september, just play around with the dates as sale fares vary day to day.

have a look on webjet BUT dont book thru them. Open another webpage and book thru the airline direct. Webjet charge you a service fee and a price guarantee fee which is rubbish..I just keyed in a made up flight and it was $27 more than booking direct..dont get sucked in by webjet...

At that price its really not practical for us to go, or it'd maybe be better to drive over there. Has anyone done that before?

I wouldn't drive that far alone, particularly through the area you're talking about. It's a VERY long drive with few petrol stations, and you need a VERY reliable car. I've heard some awful stories of that road. Plus, how much would that many k's cost you in petrol? Plus, a service for your car before you go etc.
