Default 12 week scan and blood test result

    Hi guys,

I had my 12 week scan and all went very well from what I could tell and we left the scan feeling very positive.

We were contacted bout 2 hours later with the news that my scan was normal but my blood test results put me in a very high risk category for ds. I now have a risk factor of 1:41.

    I am 36.

Just wondering if the bloods really mean that much? The scan was normal I was told.

Also, I thought I was 12w and 4 days but the lady doing the scan said to go by 13w and 4 days (according to her measurements), which would have meant that I had my blood test a week later than 10 weeks (as I was told to do it).

Wondering if someone has ever had similar?

I am booked in to have an amnio in 2 weeks.

Hopefully someone can share some positive experiences in a situation like mine?

    Ta.

I have friends who have very recently been through this... She is 29, had a lot of bleeding troubles between 9-12 weeks when the blood tests and scan were done... And her risks came back as 1:250 or thereabouts. She had one hormone in particular come back low which was the main cause of the high risk category... It's linked to the placenta so it doesn't surprise me it was low with all the bleeding she had.

She had an amnio 3-4 weeks later and had the results of a perfectly healthy baby girl 2 days later from the 'fast' results (I think it's called "FISH" results?

So for them, it all has worked out so far. That particular hormone being low can indicate the placenta may not be good in the long run so at 24 weeks she will have a growth scan to check bubs is growing well. There are other implications too, bit the dr who did the scan went through that with them before the amnio.

Based on what I saw with them, I'd highly recommend making a time to see ur dr or a specialist in the area and find out what the scenario is other than downs/trisomy etc (which may or may not be relevant to you)...

    Hope it's all good news!

Hi hun, I have no personal experience but also have a friend.

she is 30, hubby is 30, they are very fit and healthy people with 2 wonderfully healthy kids.

at her 12 wks scan with #3 they return a result of 1:11!!!!!!!!

She had the amnio, all fine. The CVS (not really sure what that is sorry) but again fine. The doctor that she went through uses ultrasound at every appointment to 'look' at the heartbeat and bubs instead of 'listening' to the heartbeat.

    Everytime, scans were fine.

She gave birth last week to another beautiful happy healthy girl, no clue as to why her score was so low but just wanted to say it definately can happen with a positive result!

Someone actually mentioned to me something about protein can affect your blood test (dont know how true though) something like if mum had eaten heaps of protein before the test?? who knows.

but keep positive, it could be absolutely nothing.
